Your Potential for Greatness

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.”

~Wilma Rudolph, Olympic Athlete (considered the fastest woman in the world in the 1960’s)

The potential for greatness lives within each of us. I believe this to be true. The question is, “Do you?”

This week, I got to spend two days in Colorado with my 17-year old son, John Robert. We were looking at colleges. We spent a day in Golden (Colorado School of Mines) and a day in Pueblo (Colorado State University – Pueblo), where John Robert is interested in going to school and playing football. Personal connections led us to both schools. The highlight of our trip was getting to meet Marquis Enoch, a great friend of one of John Robert’s former high school football coaches. Marquis treated us like family and let us into his life, football and beyond. Given Marquis’s past, this man “shouldn’t” be where he is today – on the road to completing his undergraduate degree (he walks in May), alive (he grew up in gang country and has had to manage a serious health issue for 14+ years), and filled with memories, including football, positive experiences, friendships and colleagues that will last (and serve him) for a lifetime. Why does he have hope and prospects for a bright future while others who could do not?

In my opinion, it’s because he’s had a vision for his life, a sense of purpose and that his life matters. He’s been a victim, and moved beyond it to survival. He’s been a survivor, and moved beyond it to being a warrior and a fierce competitor. And, he’s been a warrior, and moved beyond it to become someone who is consciously in life, who is aware, awake and in touch with his values, and he has begun to align these with his actions. Marquis has the word “Self-Motivated” tattooed down the full length of one arm.

What motivates him? His vision for a good life, something he’s never let go of, despite the challenges he’s faced. How has he been able to stay optimistic and keep focused on his vision? I believe two things had to do with this – faith and people. Marquis chooses to believe in what’s possible, in the world, in his life, for his daughter. And, he’s had role models, people who have had faith in him and who helped him to achieve the successes he’s experienced so far.

People and faith, our belief systems, and the habits of mind and body they produce lead to resilience. Thankfully, due to his faith and certain people in his life, Marquis developed resilience and touched into that personal truth that we all share – the potential for greatness lives within each of us. Then he got to work. He aligned his thoughts, beliefs, and actions with that truth. He has a vision for himself, his life and his family and that makes all the difference. However challenging the road, he is on a path to succeed.

Today marks the first day of the 2012 Olympics. While you spend time enjoying the games and celebrating people performing at the peak of their abilities, remember that what propelled them forward was also a dream, a vision for themselves, life and the world. Just as their vision invokes the best in them, your vision can invoke the best in you. Does your vision point you to the potential for greatness that resides within you? Take time this week to reconnect with that vision – the one you’ve had (or want to have) for yourself, your family, your core, love relationships. And, like Marquis, take real, meaningful, action, today, so you know you mean it and can begin to make progress on what matters most to you.
